Leadership Skills

Here is the big dynamic shift underway in business. It is based on the view that leadership is not permanent, it applies in different circumstances and changing times. Innovative and inspirational. Recognisable. Workable.

It is the ability to create an environment that others wish to buy into. To participate with enthusiasm and desire. It is not being pushed. It is about understanding encouraging and supporting.
On a cold winters day on a hillside recently an elderly shepherd explained his life philosophy. The nimblest of the sheep find the way along the footways towards the next feeding area. The other sheep follow along, together. The task of the shepherd is to nurture the young, locate the strays and guide the remainder. This way the sheep feel they are in charge.

Leadership is a skill for all to learn.
The starter point is to appreciate that modern leadership is founded on the acceptance that it is directly related with motivational skills.

During the ninety’s we tried to manage people the way we wanted them to be. With ever rising recruitment costs, skill shortages and competitive markets we can no longer continue to do this. In the next few years we must learn to manage people the way they are not the way we want them to be!

Motivation

By studying the works of the great writers we begin to understand the concept surrounding motivational matters. Using this as a basis for new thinking learners will be able to see that motivation depends upon the individuals needs. A lack of appreciating this has caused many promotional programmes to fail in the past.

We look at a needs analysis and recent changes in behaviour and begin to produce a method for workplace motivation in a measured system.

Given this technique, an ongoing method of monitoring both the individual and the team can not only give present readings but also indicate future areas of need.

The link with team working is essential here. There is also self-motivation to consider. All of us from time to time get a little low or sometimes depressed, particularly with current business pressures and an economy potentially based on stilts. Dark days of winter, traffic jams and demanding emails take their toll as well. Holidays relieve the pressure to some degree, however we still come back to the same problems.
Take a little time out and find out if what you are striving for in business still really motivates you?
